jQuery has previously been managed by a board that was part of the Software Freedom Conservancy. Now an independent foundation has been created to perform that task.

The Software Freedom Conservancy

The Conservancy describes itself as follows.
The Software Freedom Conservancy is a not-for-profit organization that helps promote, improve, develop, and defend Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects. Conservancy provides a non-profit home and infrastructure for FLOSS projects. This allows FLOSS developers to focus on what they do best — writing and improving FLOSS for the general public — while Conservancy takes care of the projects' needs that do not relate directly to software development and documentation.

The jQuery Foundation

In the announcement of the formation of the jQuery foundation, its nature is summarized thusly:
The jQuery Foundation is a non-profit trade association and the home of jQuery … Founded by a group of leading JavaScript developers and architects, the jQuery Foundation is dedicated to three goals:
  • supporting development of the jQuery Core, UI, and Mobile projects;
  • providing jQuery documentation and support;
  • and fostering the jQuery community.
The Foundation’s president will be Dave Methvin, current head of the jQuery Core development team:
“jQuery is the most popular JavaScript library, and creating an autonomous organization is the next step in ensuring its future development and benefiting everyone who uses jQuery,” said Methvin. “We’ll be announcing several initiatives shortly, including the next jQuery Conference and other efforts driven by needs within the community and the project.”
